In the 1960s, César Chávez was a leading advocate for farm workers’ rights in California. In June 1966, he came to Borrego Springs to support local workers who wanted to join the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA), which Chávez had founded in 1962.

Resistance from the Community

Chávez and his team faced opposition from influential members of the community, who put pressure on local motels to refuse them accommodation. The team was told they could not camp at Christmas Circle Community Park in the center of town, which was a popular gathering spot for locals and visitors.

Perseverance and Impact

Despite facing resistance, Chávez and his team persevered. They camped at Borrego Palm Canyon Campground in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, about four miles east of town. They were able to continue their work, meeting with farm workers and rallying support for the NFWA.

Chávez’s visit to Borrego Springs left a lasting impact on the area. His advocacy helped bring attention to the working conditions of farm workers in the region and helped galvanize support for their rights.
