Soroptimist Club's First Year Hosting a Success

The Soroptimist Club of Borrego Springs successfully hosted its first Circle of Art Festival this past weekend at Christmas Circle Park, carrying on the legacy of this much-loved event. Previously organized by B.A.S.I.C. (Basic Assistance to Students In the Community), the Circle of Art remains a cherished annual juried art show that brings together the heart of Borrego Springs. Under sunny skies and warm spring temperatures, visitors enjoyed a weekend of captivating art, live music, and a strong sense of community.

Poster Artists of the Year

Since its founding in 1989, the Circle of Art has showcased outstanding local and regional artists across a variety of mediums, including painting, sculpture, photography, jewelry, ceramics, and more. This year’s featured poster artists, Kathy King and Paulette Donnellon, generously donated their artwork to help fund Soroptimist Club scholarships, which empower local women and girls through education.

S-Club Students Volunteer at Circle of Art Festival

Borrego Springs High School S-Club students, organized by Soroptimist member Sylvia Maas, volunteered throughout the festival, assisting artists, guests, and event staff to ensure a smooth and successful event. In addition to her role with the S-Club, Sylvia Maas is also leading the Bike4BorregoKids Fundraiser, an initiative raising vital funds to benefit youth programs in Borrego Springs. Sound of The Ram Community Radio Brings Festival to Life

The energy of the festival was elevated by The Ram, Borrego Springs Community Radio, led by Mike Rue. Throughout the weekend, The Ram broadcasted live music, enriching the atmosphere at Christmas Circle and adding an extra layer of fun and connection for both artists and visitors.

Every spring, the calendar of the Christian churches comes round to the Forty Days of Lent, a time of self examination and reflection, very much like the season of Ramadan in Islam. These weeks culminate in Holy Weeks, the time from Palm Sunday, this year April 13, till Easter Sunday, April 20. Easter, coming from an Old English word for spring, is the celebration of Jesus being raised from death. But the Resurrection is preceded by several other special days. Called Maundy Thursday from the Latin mandatum or commandment, Thursday in Holy Week commemorates the last supper Jesus had with his disciples. At this meal he gave them bread and wine to share, this becoming the central sacrament of the church, holy communion or the Eucharist. Thursday also recalls Jesus' washing the feet of his friends as an act of love, a commandment he urged them to continue--their love for each other and all the world. Good Friday seems wrongly named for it is the day of Jesus' death on the cross. Yet this self giving is for Christians the ultimate sign of God's love for all humankind and the world. On the next day, Holy Saturday, towards evening, a vigil service of readings, the proclamation of the resurrection and holy communion begin the Easter celebration. Finally on Easter Sunday services of song, prayer, readings and communion feast the rising of the Lord from death, a promise to all of new life with God and each other forever.
