Hacienda Del Sol: A Mid-Century Modern Oasis

Discover the Retro-Cool Charm of this Restored Motor Lodge

As a Borrego Springs local, I have always been intrigued by the charming exterior of Hacienda Del Sol. Recently, I noticed the bright “open” signs in the windows and couldn’t resist taking a peek inside. I was delighted to discover a beautifully restored mid-century modern lobby that transported me back in time!

Originally built in the late 1940s, with additions of the lobby and storefronts completed between 1956 and 1960. This Borrego Springs icon has recently been thoughtfully renovated to maintain its vintage appeal while providing modern amenities. Hacienda Del Sol boasts 20 units spread across 10 acres of mature desert landscape, conveniently located in the heart of town for easy access to all the fun.

And there is more!

Hollywood Sleeps Here

Hacienda Del Sol has a rich history dating back to the 1950s when it was a chosen destination for Hollywood stars like Marlon Brando. Mr. Brando even stayed at the Hacienda Del Sol twice, once during the filming of “The Young Lions” war film in 1958 and again for a commercial shoot at Font’s Point in 2000.

Henny the Truck at Hacienda Del Sol

Henry The Truck Approved

To get a fun and nostalgic perspective on the new renovations at Hacienda Del Sol, we turned to our friends Denny Duvall and his trusty 1950s Ford panel truck, Henry. As Old Borego originals with hearts of 16-year-olds, they were the perfect duo to blend in and assess the situation.

After taking a look from the outside, Henry gave the new renovations a resounding thumbs up, proving that Hacienda Del Sol has managed to maintain its vintage charm while adding modern amenities that are sure to impress.

For entertaining tales of the early desert days and road trip shenanigans, be sure to check out Denny’s book.

Did Bob Dylan Stay Here Too?

Bob Dylan, known primarily as a singer/songwriter, was also an accomplished painter. His landscapes, inspired by the reality around him, are featured on a website. One of his paintings, titled “Motel in New Mexico” is speculated to be inspired by Borrego’s unique architecture, which Dylan clearly found worthy of showcasing.

Motor Lodge Designed by a Local Legend

Hacienda Del Sol has a unique San Diego Mid-Century Modern design, created by architect Richard Zerbe, that has left a lasting impact on Borrego Springs’ architectural landscape. Zerbe’s designs were inspired by the desert’s unique nature and played a significant role in transforming the town into a modern oasis. Zerbe’s signature can be found on many development projects in Borrego Springs, including the Hacienda Del Sol Motel, de Anza Desert Country Club, Borrego Springs Shopping Center, and “El Patio” Retail Stores.
