Discover the largest lithium source in North America at the Salton Sea with Jim Turner, COO of Controlled Thermal Resources. Learn about the geothermal processes generating electricity since the 1980s and the innovative plans for integrating geothermal power with lithium extraction.
The area around the Salton Sea, just one hour from Borrego Springs, is the largest known source of lithium in North America. The lithium is contained in super-heated geothermal water as much as 8000 feet below the surface, with temperatures over 600 degrees. This phenomenon is due to the Salton Trough, a pull-apart zone on the San Andreas Fault that allows water to contact the earth's heat at extreme depths.
Since the 1980s, this geothermal water has been producing electricity at the Salton Sea. The process involves pumping the water to the surface, generating steam to turn power turbines, and then returning the hot water back to its source.
Hosted by ABDNHA, this informative webinar features Jim Turner, COO of Controlled Thermal Resources, who discusses the regional and national significance of this resource. With over 30 years in senior management roles in renewable energy, primarily geothermal development, engineering, and operations, Jim has served as Vice-President and General Manager at Berkshire Hathaway Energy, overseeing their Salton Sea Geothermal Operations. A widely regarded expert on Salton Sea geothermal and lithium production, Jim has appeared on PBS, NBC, CNBC, and in major print publications globally.
Jim Turner is now Chief Operating Officer for Controlled Thermal Resources, an American company planning the world's first integrated geothermal power-lithium extraction plant.
