Here’s a list of places in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park that require a high-clearance vehicle:

  1. Fish Creek Wash – This area features a popular hiking trail, but the road leading to it is rough and rocky. A high clearance vehicle is recommended.
  2. Font’s Point – The road leading to Font’s Point is also rough and rocky, and a high clearance vehicle is recommended.
  3. Calcite Mine – This area is popular for off-roading, but the road leading to it is rough and requires a high clearance vehicle.
  4. Carrizo Creek Road – This area offers beautiful views and hiking opportunities, but the road leading to it can be rough and requires a high clearance vehicle.

Here are some popular hiking spots in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park and where to park:

  1. Borrego Palm Canyon – To reach the trailhead for Borrego Palm Canyon, visitors should park at the Borrego Palm Canyon Campground. The trailhead is located near the campground.
  2. The Slot – The trailhead for The Slot is located on Buttes Pass Road. Visitors can park at the turnout near the trailhead.
  3. Hellhole Canyon – To reach the trailhead for Hellhole Canyon, visitors should park at the end of Hellhole Canyon Road. The trailhead is located near the parking area.
  4. Yaqui Well Trail – Visitors can park at the Yaqui Well picnic area to access the trailhead for Yaqui Well Trail.

It’s important to note that visitors should always check trail conditions before heading out on a hike and should come prepared with plenty of water, sunscreen, and appropriate footwear.

Look no further than Oyster Shell Wash. This incredible destination is located along the Fish Creek and North Fish Creek wash and is accessible only by 4×4 vehicles (unless you want to hike of course, just dont bring your Honda Accord). The end vehicle access point is located at 3.00263, -116.13395. The Ride Through The Wash The journey through Oyster Shell Wash is not just a scenic drive, but a journey through a unique and otherworldly landscape. The Oyster Shell Wash area is known for its unique geological features, including rock formations and crystalized gypsum hills. The seashore evidence found in the area, such as oyster shells, add to the history and uniqueness of the area. The terrain in Oyster Shell Wash can be compared to parts of Split Mountain Gorge, making it a unique and exciting destination for geologists and nature lovers alike. As you make your way through the wash, you may also encounter pieces of selenite, a glass-like crystalized form of gypsum, shining in the sun. This is a true testament to the beauty and geology of the area, and a sight not to be missed. Five Palms Oasis: A Remote Destination in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park The Five Palms Oasis is a small cluster of Washingtonia palms located in the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, near Tule Wash. It is one of several palm oases in the park, known for its sparse setting and dry conditions. Unlike other palm groves in the area, Five Palms has no running water source and only features a few palm trees. Location and Coordinates Latitude/Longitude: 33°14’57.8″N 116°06’23.4″W Coordinates: 33.249389, -116.106500 This isolated oasis is surrounded by mudstone terrain with visible white salt deposits. These salt patches give the area a unique appearance, contrasting sharply with the dry desert floor. Washingtonia Palms at the Oasis The Washingtonia palms at Five Palms are well-adapted to the desert environment. Known for their tall trunks and fan-shaped leaves, these palms survive in harsh conditions, thriving with minimal water. Accessing Five Palms Oasis A high-clearance, 4WD vehicle is needed to reach the Five Palms Oasis via the Cut Across Trail. The trail is a rugged jeep route that crosses remote sections of the desert. Though other oases in Anza-Borrego feature larger groves and water sources, Five Palms offers a quieter, more remote experience. Visiting Tips This area is dry, and there are no amenities or water sources. Visitors should be prepared for high temperatures and plan accordingly. Despite its remoteness, Five Palms offers a glimpse of how life survives in the desert.
