Mystery of Stolen Uranium Ore: A Rock Hound’s Tale

Los Angeles Times – October 31, 1948

Authorities in Eastern San Diego County and in Imperial County today were searching for an automobile belonging to Fred Hinds and containing samples of ore believed high in uranium content.

Deputy sheriffs at Julian and Ramona, as well as the Sheriff’s office in El Centro, were notified of the theft, and ordered to be on the lookout for the car. Duvall said that the trunk compartment contained samples of ore believed high in radioactive content.

Hinds’ recent discovery claims have sent a fever of “uranium excitement” throughout the Borrego desert area. Meanwhile, he has remained secretive about the exact location of his find.
