American Legion Passes Recycling to OLAX

Community recycling moves forward

A long-running recycling service in Borrego Springs is continuing with new hands at the helm. The American Legion Post 853 program in the parking lot of Center Market is now being carried forward by Organización Latinx de Borrego Springs, known as OLAX.

According to a community email from Post 853 Commander Dale, OLAX officially took over the aluminum can recycling effort at Center Market on March 1, 2026, and quickly got to work. “OLAX has taken over the aluminum can recycling at Center Market. They did their first recycling party on March 1,” he wrote. The response was immediate, with the collection area filling up again within a week.

American Legion Hands Off Recycling

to OLAX

The story is not just that OLAX is recycling. It is that a service built and maintained for years by the American Legion is being continued rather than lost. Dale thanked Harry Jones and the Post 853 members who set up the recycling program and provided it to Borrego Springs residents and visitors for many years.

That handoff matters because it keeps an important local service going. It also shows how Borrego Springs works at its best, with one community group stepping in as another passes along a project that people rely on.

OLAX is known in Borrego Springs for supporting culture, education, and community efforts. By taking over recycling at Center Market, the organization is also helping provide a practical service that benefits residents, visitors, and the environment.

Bringing aluminum cans and plastic to Center Market helps support that effort. It keeps recyclable material out of the trash and helps show that this kind of local service matters to the community.

As Dale wrote, “All the best to OLAX for keeping this service going for the Borrego Springs community. Please support this program by recycling your aluminum and plastic at Center Market.”
