Rainbow Wash is a 6.2-mile trail that takes hikers and off-roaders deep into the Borrego Badlands in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. The trail features stunning sandstone formations in shades of tan and rust red, remnants of when the area was underwater millions of years ago.
Hikers begin on a wide plain that narrows into a canyon with steep sandstone walls, ending just below Fonts Point. Off-roaders can follow the wash for most of the trail, though only street-legal vehicles are allowed.
Be mindful of potential flash floods, and note there is often no cell service in the canyon. Before your adventure, check weather reports for the mountains to the west.
Whether hiking or off-roading, Rainbow Wash promises an unforgettable exploration of the Borrego Badlands.

To reach Rainbow Wash, head east from Borrego Springs along Highway 78. Once you reach Ocotillo Wells, turn north onto the dirt road. Continue for about 4 miles until you enter Rainbow Wash. A high-clearance or 4x4 vehicle is recommended for this rugged terrain, especially after rain, as the roads can become difficult to traverse.
Camping at Rainbow Wash is a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the solitude and beauty of Anza-Borrego Desert. There are several flat, open spaces throughout the wash that are perfect for pitching a tent or setting up camp. With no nearby facilities, this is a primitive camping experience, so be sure to bring everything you need for your stay.
At night, the skies above Rainbow Wash come alive with stars, making it an excellent spot for stargazing. The peace and quiet of the desert, combined with the remote location, provide a true escape from city life.
While the desert may appear barren, Rainbow Wash is home to a variety of desert plants and animals. Keep an eye out for creosote bushes, ocotillo, and various cacti along your journey. Wildlife sightings are common, with various bird species and small mammals making appearances.
The best time to visit Rainbow Wash is from October through March, when cooler temperatures make outdoor activities more comfortable. While clear skies offer excellent opportunities for stargazing and photography, Rainbow Wash is equally stunning on cloudy days. The canyon walls change colors, shifting from vibrant tans and reds to deeper hues, depending on the sky's conditions. Early mornings or late afternoons are ideal for hiking or driving, as the light enhances these color shifts and provides relief from the desert heat.
