Discover the Desert Through the Eyes of Artists: An Unforgettable Exhibition

Nestled in the heart of the Anza-Borrego Desert, the Borrego Springs community is gearing up for one of its most anticipated events of the year—the 18th Annual Plein Air Invitational. From March 4th to April 14th, 2024, the Borrego Art Institute (BAI) Gallery will transform into a vibrant showcase of the desert's unique beauty and environmental wonders, as seen through the eyes of talented Plein Air artists.

A Brush with Nature: A Week of Artistic Endeavor

The event kicks off with a week dedicated to creativity, where 14 selected artists from various corners of the United States, including California, New Mexico, and beyond, will converge on Borrego Springs. These artists, each with their unique styles and mediums ranging from oils and watercolors to pastels, will immerse themselves in the landscape from March 4th to 9th, capturing the essence of the desert's ever-changing hues, dramatic landscapes, and serene beauty. Visitors to the gallery during this week are in for a treat, with new artworks being added daily and extended gallery hours until 7:00 pm.

A Spectacle of Skills: Quick Draw Competition and Awards

One of the highlights of the week is the Quick Draw Competition on March 6th, where artists and the public alike can witness the thrilling spectacle of creation under pressure. Set against the picturesque backdrop of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, artists will have a limited time to complete a work, offering a unique insight into the artistic process.

The culmination of this artistic journey is the Reception and Awards ceremony on March 9th, where the community and art enthusiasts will gather to celebrate the artists' achievements and the stunning array of artworks produced.

Continued Inspiration: Gallery Hours and Visiting Information

Following the excitement of the opening week, the BAI Gallery will continue to host the exhibition until April 14th, with regular hours from 10 am to 4 pm (closed Mondays and Tuesdays). This provides ample opportunity for visitors to explore the collection at their leisure, reflecting on the diverse interpretations of the desert's majestic landscapes.

A Legacy of Talent: Honoring Last Year's Winners

Reflecting on the previous year's event, the 2023 Plein Air Invitational left a lasting impression with remarkable winning pieces like Margaret Larlham's "Round the Bend at Coyote Creek," capturing the 1st place, and Jim Wodark's "Sunrise, Moonset," securing the 2nd place. These artworks, along with others recognized for their excellence, set a high bar for this year's participants and continue to inspire future generations of Plein Air artists.

An Invitation to Experience Art and Nature

The 18th Annual Plein Air Invitational is not just an art exhibition; it's a celebration of the enduring bond between art and nature, offering a glimpse into the creative process and the myriad ways artists interpret the world around them. Whether you're an art aficionado, a nature lover, or simply in search of inspiration, the Plein Air Invitational in Borrego Springs promises an enriching experience that showcases the beauty of the desert through the lens of diverse artistic visions.

As we anticipate the unveiling of this year's masterpieces, the community of Borrego Springs invites you to immerse yourself in the art, the environment, and the warm embrace of creativity that defines this unique event.
