In our exploration of Anza Borrego State Park, we were fortunate to encounter the desert shaggy mane, Podaxis Pistillaris, in a somewhat unexpected location – near the historic Calcite Mine. This area, known for its geological significance and scenic beauty, also proved to be a nurturing ground for these fascinating mushrooms.
The vicinity of Calcite Mine, with its slightly different soil composition and microclimate, provides a unique habitat that supports the growth of the desert shaggy mane. Here, amidst the rugged terrain and remnants of mining history, these mushrooms seem to thrive, adding a surprising element to the landscape.
Stumbling upon the desert shaggy mane near Calcite Mine was an unforgettable experience. It underscored the diverse ecological niches within Anza Borrego State Park and the importance of protecting these areas for the continued survival of such unique species.
The desert shaggy mane is a fairly large mushroom, with a distinctive appearance that makes it stand out from other mushrooms. It has a long, slender stem that can grow up to 20 centimeters in height, and a shaggy, white, or tan-colored cap that can reach up to 15 centimeters in diameter. As the mushroom matures, the cap begins to split and curl, giving it a frilly appearance.
