Each spring, Borrego Springs transforms into a haven for birdwatchers and photographers eager to capture the majestic Swainson’s Hawks in flight. Recognized nationally as one of the best hawk watch sites, this desert town in San Diego County offers a unique opportunity to witness and photograph these raptors during their northward migration.
Borrego Springs stands out as a premier location for hawk photography for several reasons:
The Borrego Valley Hawkwatch is dedicated to monitoring and documenting the migration of Swainson’s Hawks. Founded by Hal Cohen in 2003, the Hawkwatch relies on volunteers to count and record the hawks during their spring migration.
Each spring, Swainson’s Hawks travel from their wintering grounds in Mexico, Colombia, and Argentina to Borrego Valley. The migration peaks in mid to late March, with thousands of hawks passing through, often seen in the sky simultaneously. The hawks feast on the caterpillars of the White-lined Sphinx Moth, which thrive on the blooming desert flowers after winter rains.
Hal Cohen, a self-proclaimed "hawkaholic," moved to Borrego Springs in 2001, missing his hawk-watching activities from Illinois. In 2003, he discovered a steady stream of Swainson’s Hawks migrating through Borrego Valley. This led to the establishment of the Borrego Valley Hawkwatch. Since then, it has become one of only two hawkwatches in California and the top site in North America for observing migrating Swainson’s Hawks in spring.
In 2019, the migration saw a late but spectacular arrival, with nearly 8,000 hawks passing through Borrego Valley, attracting the attention of a BBC film crew. Despite the late arrival, the event highlighted the significance of Borrego Springs as a critical stopover for these raptors.
